Why modeling?

Croatia is among the many countries that don't have their own autochthonous name for a reduced size copy so we use two names: maketa (eng. model) and model. Both names are of foreign origin. Maketa (eng. model) comes to us from France, and model from England.

Models, because of its manifest importance, are called the reduced (in our case) ships, their copies in a specific, reduced scale. With the exact emulation or her harder. It depends on the availability of documentation (photographs, drawings, literature) and modeler’s skill. Models include all the details, to the minutest detail, her role model in a certain proportion. Creating a model is a long process, preparations are often extensive. Particularly, when it comes to reconstruction, which often becomes a museum exhibit. Models are made of diferent materials; wood is the most prevalent, followed by metals. The type and quantity of tools, and the way in which modeler handles with them in the processing, are very important for ultimate success and overall impression.

There are table (static) and floating (functional) models. Big and only difference between them is in the ability of floatable models to be maintained on the water. They are equipped with propulsion, and the most common with control mechanism. Outer protection of model must then have a special property - waterproof.

Models (in our case) are miniatures that are not reduced copies of ships, but are independent and technically separate creations, design and subordinate equipment are very important in case of achieving the highest possible speed (motor power or size of the sails). Models are not produced in ratio, but their size is determined by special rules of competition.

Exceptions are the models made in professional workshops, which are subjected to hydrodynamic tests in separate pools of shipbuilding institutes in order to more accurately assess the resistance of ship hull, propeller selection, the behavior of the ship on the waves, or for some other reason.

The word model itself has multiple meanings as well as in its origin. According to the "Oxford Paperback Dictionary (1988) the word model can take the form of nouns, adjectives and verbs. As a noun can refer to: a) some form or manner - a style of structure and shape, such as new model of car, model of shoes and the like, b) a clothing of well known designer or its copy c) a person, thing or action that is regarded as the best of its kind or worth of imitation d) a person employed to pose for the artist, whether for photographing and recording, whether for painting or drawing of the statue - the statue and the like; e) a person employed to display clothes on the catwalks, showrooms and fairs and shops, wearing it on himself or herself. As an adjective: - the best of its kind and as an example. In football or war to lead an attack by a particular model, pursue policies according to a model. As a verb: a) modeling, create a model (clay, plasticine, plastic compounds, etc.) that is similar to the material formed into a model, b) construct or make things consistent with the model, the prototype, etc., c) work, (be employed) as an artistic model or a fashion model for displaying garments on the fashion stage.

Such a broad general terms - a model and modeling - condition application of name of model, which is indisputable and concrete, no matter it is a foreign word and no matter that the older generations half-bodies which were made in shipbuilding and shipyard schools for purpose of blueprints, or a ship or boat were called - models, hence the traditional handover to the younger generations in the name of resized copy.
